Abstrakt:
The concepts of memory and identity are definitely not foreign to sociology. Theoretical and empirical sociology pays considerable attention to both of these categories, which seem to be closely related. We can say that individuals and communities are constantly building their own identity also and especially through memory – both individual and collective. Much depends on what we remember as individuals and also as communities, what we remind, what we are proud of, what we are ashamed of, etc. As Pope John Paul II recalls, memory is a force that creates the identity of human beings, both individually and collectively. Particularly through memory, a sense of identity is created and crystallized in the person’s psyche – for example identity of Slovak, European, and Christian, etc. Presented theoretical and empirical paper, based especially on the last book of Pope John Paul II, underlines few basic sociological aspects of relation between categories of memory and identity.
