Abstract:
Universities often rely on intermediaries to attract international students. Currently, agencies mediating university education abroad are important actors of active university policy in countries with developed international student migration. Current research explores the function and importance of these agencies in relation to the number of international students in individual regions and universities, or their orientation to certain university disciplines. For most universities, agents play a very important role in international student recruitment. This work is an addition to existing research on the role of agencies in higher education mobility. In our research, we focused on intermediary agencies operating in Slovakia. Via interviews with major agencies in Slovakia, we explore, who are clients of these agencies, how agencies influence their decision to study abroad at particular universities. According to our findings, the operation of these intermediaries has a notable impact on the volume and destinations of students leaving to study abroad.
