In all areas of local self-government is reflects the requirement of consistency the democracy and expertise, which is at the level of local self-government most pronounced in the person of the mayor. The aim of contribution is theoretical and legislative definition of the functions of the mayor. Contribution in theoretical part provides the definition of mayor in local self-government and compares this institute and the performance of its functions with other countries. The author of the contribution presents the partial results of her research aimed at detecting mayor´s education. The research results were processed using the primary data analysis using descriptive statistics methods. The sample consisted of a core set of objects. There had been addressed all mayors of 2,753 municipalities in the Slovak Republic. Research sample were mayors of the Slovak Republic.vzdelanie, starosta, odbornosť, územná samospráva, demokracia
