In the modern world where globalization processes include more and more societies, cultural unification the increasingly progresses, it seems that the maintenance of regional identity and the rebirth of identification’s declarations doesn’t play a significant role. But it turns out that the regional ethnic autonomy is still attractive and regional ethnic identifications are current and useful. Such a situation occurred in Silesia, where in 2011 in National Census more than 800 000 people declared Silesian nationality. What was the reason for such a result? What kind of the processes we had, that so strongly Silesians marked their individuality? Article aims to present what kind of historical processes led to the formation of specific regional identity in Silesia. In the theoretical part we will discuss the concept of ethnic identity and ethnic identity. There will be applied to approach of Zbigniew Bokszański’s ethnic identity which will be useful in further analysis. This conception will be supplemented by our own ethnicity dual approach. Analysis will be initiated in the second half of the nineteenth century through the interwar period, the period of real socialism and the political transformation. Then, based on our own sociological research, will be presented the declaration of ethnic identification in selected communities in Silesia which is an indicator of their identity.national identification, ethnic identification, identity, Silesians
